Sorghum, or 高梁 in Chinese, is a type of grain that is often used in gluten-free baking. Chinese people use sorghum to make rice wine. Sorghum grain is native to Asia so you can find sorghum easily at many supermarkets in Shanghai. I’ve seen them at Carrefour and organic/import shops here.

My favorite gluten-free bread recipe requires sorghum flour. I have not seen sorghum flour sold in Shanghai before, but I am able to grind my own flours using my VitaMix. The VitaMix is a must-have! I use it to make all types of flours for my gluten-free baking, including white/brown rice flour, sorghum flour, various bean flour, soy flour, cornmeal, flaxseed meal, etc…

Here’s a video of me making sorghum flour. Unfortunately, if you live in China, YouTube has been blocked for some time…

Thanks so much for this recpie. My little brother can not eat gluten which makes things very tough on a young child. I will definitely be sending this page to my mom. Thanks again

Do your products contain traces of nuts or made in a facility with nuts? My kids have nut allergies.
